What to check through the year to keep your heating and cooling ready. Print it and keep it near your thermostat.
Spring
- Book a cooling tune-up
- Replace the air filter
- Clear 2 feet around the outdoor unit
- Test cooling on a warm day
- Check the condensate drain
Summer
- Check filters monthly
- Close west-facing blinds in the afternoon
- Watch for ice on copper lines
- Check filters more often during smoke events
Fall
- Book a heating check
- Test heat before the first cold night
- Test smoke and CO alarms
- Clear leaves from the outdoor unit
Winter
- Keep vents and returns unblocked
- Know where your gas shutoff is
- Expect short defrost cycles on heat pumps
- Replace the filter if it looks dirty
